Note that this event will go ahead on this date only if the weather is forecast to be mostly clear and sunny. No one likes to be up there when it's snowing! Coordinator will watch the forecast and we can make a final decision probably a few days or so prior. If the weather is not ideal then we'll find something else to do and reschedule Sunshine Meadows to sometime in March.

Please purchase your own ticket for the gondola upon arrival, cost: $37.00 each + tax. Regroup outside at the base of the clock tower and we'll head up the gondola together. Regroup again at the top of the gondola, out of the way of ski traffic.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
(1) We will be hiking along the edge of a ski trail at times so please walk single file and watch closely to stay out of the way of ski traffic!
(2) We will be snowshoeing in areas NOT designated as snowshoe areas! Anyone can snowshoe there but I want you to understand this is not a designated snowshoe area.
(3) There is avalanche terrain around (it's the alpine after all) but we will be avoiding avalanche areas.

Your coordinator has snowshoed to Sunshine Meadows on many occasions without concern; however, it is your responsibility to be aware of avalanche ratings on the day of event and alert to avalanche risk areas at all times.

From Sunshine Village we'll follow the edge of a ski trail for approx 1.5km towards Rock Isle Lake, approx 250m elev gain. Once in the meadow we can explore and play in the snow for another few km's but we will stick together as a group for safety until we're more confident with the area and conditions. We'll do a loop and then return the same way we came.

We'll plan to be back at the top of the gondola by about 3:30-4PM-ish in order to be back in Calgary by 6-6:30PM. Sunset is after 6PM so gives us lots of daylight to enjoy.

Required Items to Bring:
- snowshoes, poles & gaitors - the snow is very deep up there!
- snowboots or winter-weight hiking boots
- layered clothing appropriate to changing winter conditions - note temperatures can change suddenly and without warning and can be very windy at times!
- toque & neck tube or scarf
- lunch, snacks, warm &/or cold drinks - easy to eat as we won't stop for long and we won't be stopping at the day lodge except possibly to use the washrooms

Take the #1 highway 9 km past Banff to the Sunshine Village Interchange and follow the Sunshine Village Road an additional 9 km to the parking lot at the base of the gondola lift. After purchasing your gondola ticket, meet outside and we'll all ride up together.

Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $96.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.32, effective Tuesday, April 16, 2024). This is based on $0.16/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
