Itinerary:

Four days of hiking and camping at beautiful Lake O'Hara!
- July 1st - take the bus up to the campground, set up camp and then take in a hike at some point during the day or evening.
- July 2nd & 3rd - probably full day hikes
- July 4th - enjoy the last bits of Lake O'Hara and take the bus out according to the preferences you have determined with your carpool buddies.

Day hikes will be moderate and slow-paced, to be discussed as a group.
Some hikes of particular interest:
- Opabin Plateau - described as one of the classic hikes of the Canadian Rockies - 6km, 250m elev gain
- Lake Oesa - another classic favorite hike - 6.4km, 240m elev gain
- Lakeshore Circuit - 2.8km
Maybe hikes:
- Lake McArthur - 7km, 310m elev gain
- Linda Lake - 15km, 305km elev gain + 3.7km further to Cathedral Lakes

Trail and other information

The Lake O'Hara Valley is a high-elevation backcountry area with trails that are often snow-bound, muddy or inaccessible. Come prepared for all weather conditions and to be self-sufficient.

Baggage is restricted to two small bags per person (max. weight: 25 kg; max length + width + height: must not exceed 158 cm/62”).
Hard sided food coolers and storage bins and items stored in plastic bags or loose items will not be accepted on the bus.Please leave musical instruments, radios and lawn chairs behind.
Communal facilities include two kitchen shelters with wood stoves; a fire pit; separate food and garbage storage; grey water disposal; pit privies; firewood and a splitting maul; and well water (not always available early and late season).
Primus stove required for cooking.
Bear-aware procedures for cooking, and storing food and garbage must be observed.
Tent pads (2.7m X 2.7m) are designed for small backpacking tents. One tent per campsite. Campers choose their site once they arrive. It's not always possible for parties to camp at adjacent sites.

Required Items to Bring:
- Camping gear - plan to bring all your own stuff unless you pre-arrange sharing with someone. The coordinators won't be arranging any sharing. Please read details carefully at the Lake O'Hara website regarding weight, size and gear restrictions.
- Bring all your own food and drink for all meals for 4 days. If you prefer to share meals please make your own arrangements.
- Dishes, toilet paper .... you know, everything but the kitchen sink up to the wgt maximum posted at their website.
- Soft-sided cooler to transport food + drink. Note it MUST be soft-sided or will not be allowed on the bus.
- sunscreen, hat, gloves, rain gear
- hiking boots and camp shoes
- Valid National Park Pass must be displayed in vehicle. Can be purchased at any Park Visitor Information Centre or from the O'Hara bus attendant
- Bus and camping confirmations - arrive at the bus staging area at least 20 minutes prior to departure
- Please note that no valuables should be left in your parked vehicle
Recommended Items to Bring:
- cash to buy snacks at Le Relais day shelter.
- Headlamp or flashlight, gloves and warm jacket for night time
- hiking poles

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Follow highway 1 to the junction with highway 1A, 12.6 km WEST of LAKE LOUISE (shortly after passing the B.C. border). Turn onto highway 1A (left), cross the railway tracks and turn right to the Lake O'Hara parking lot.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $73.15 (calculated at total Km * $0.19, effective Tuesday, September 07, 2010). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
