| Itinerary: |
A (relatively) easy trip to the West Coast Trail. We will plan according to the tide tables so that we can:
- Day 1: Hike in from Port Renfrew to Thrasher Cove (7km through rain forest)
- Day 2: Out-and-back hike along the coastal route (return to Thrasher Cove)
- Day 3: Hike back from Thrasher Cove to Port Renfrew
See some pics that show what this three-day trip would be like: Private FB Album
We'll try to do some stuff before heading to the trails:
- An activity with V-ROC (Vancouver)
- A visit to the Bug Zoo in Victoria
- Anything else in Victoria?
After the 3-day trip on WCT, we'll stay over at a motel in Port Renfrew. Some options:
- Soul Creek Lodge
- West Coast Trail Motel
Once we're rested up in Port Renfrew, we'll proceed to do a couple days of hiking/camping on the Juan de Fuca trail, which has its trailhead near the Port Renfrew trailhead for WCT
Note that you can pick and choose your "add-ons" for this trip. We'll expect you for WCT, and you can let us know if you're doing any of the other activities.
We'll be choosing our dates according to the tide tables. These should not change, but we'll re-check them before buying permits in spring 2012. In order of preference:
| Date for DAY 2 |
Tide Below 1.8m Starts At |
Time Window |
Our Start Date |
| July 9 | 08:34 | 5 hrs 23 min | July 8 |
| Aug 6 | 07:18 | 5 hrs 25 min | Aug 5 |
| July 7 | 06:57 | 6 hrs 11 min | July 6 |
| July 8 | 07:42 | 4 hrs 52 min | July 7 |
| Aug 7 | 08:05 | 4 hrs 50 min | Aug 6 |
| July 10 | 9:30 | 4 hrs 20 min | July 9 |
| Aug 8 | 09:09 | 3 hrs 43 min | Aug 7 |
We can book our reservations on May 1st, so you'll be expected to be committed (and pre-paid for the booking) by April 20th. Our intended start date is July 8th, but if we can't get that date, I will go down the list in order of preference (per the list above). |

Recommended Items to Bring:
- Some kind of traction devices for your feet, but NOT our usual Stabilicers or MicroSpikes. You need something that has some kind of pokey nubbins (not too big) for traction on the slippery slippery log-crossings and walk-ways, and that also will not be pulled from your feet by the bogs (we tried putting them on and off through the day but eventually gave up on that and just left them on). Also, something where your "nubbins" don't get sucked out individually from the structure (this happened to Rhonda... by the time she reached the end of the trail she was down to zero nubbins on one foot and one nubbin on the other), or that you can buy replacement "nubbins". Some possible options:
- BEST: MonsterGrips (probably wouldn't get sucked off your boots, and you can buy replacement nubbins in case they get pulled out)
- BEST: Get-A-Grip Advanced Cleats - these look like they would not get sucked off your boots, and you can buy replacement nubbins in case they get pulled out
- VERY GOOD: GripOns - not real likely to get sucked off, and can buy replacement nubbins in case they get pulled out
- OK: Stabilicers Sport (these look like they would not get sucked off your boots, and the screws would not get pulled out. They might be overkill for traction and the screws might gum up with muck).
- MEH: Sub-Zero Full-Foot Ice Cleats (these look like they might get sucked off your boots easily)
- MEH: Perfect Solutions Ice Traction Slip-Ons (these look like they might get sucked off your boots, and/or the nubbins might get pulled out)
- MEH: Spiky Ice Cleats (these look like they might get sucked off your boots, and/or the nubbins might get pulled out)
- MEH: Stabilicers Lite (these look like they might get sucked off your boots easily)
- Camping booties: They're really awesome for running around camp... the sand can be very coarse. You might want to bring sandals as well, but I found that the sand would tear my feet up pretty bad. I was happiest at camp with my booties on and cinched up to keep the sand out.
- Fabric water bucket to haul water from the stream back to camp for filtering. It can be very cold filtering at the stream... it's soooo nice to be able to bring the water back with you and filter at your leisure.
- Other items per Rhonda's WCT checklist
- Do NOT bring:
- Two hiking poles - definitely bring one, but only one. You need one pole for stability, and one hand for holding on to stuff.
- Ground sheet or tent pegs. We're camping on the beach. They're pointless.
- Bear spray or bangers
- Axe - not allowed
