| My personal mission for today was to go \"up\" the Lynx trail, connect through on Pocaterra and then go \"down\" Packers, thereby maximizing the screamin' fun hill experiences. Of our original fourteen intrepid skiiers, one turned back early on, four split off to do an 11km loop, and eight humored my wishes, joining me for the prescribed 18.5km loop. We were not disappointed... the hills were a plenty, the weather was great, and with a bit of new snow and freshly track set trails (mostly), the experience was fantastic and I felt thoroughly outdoored by the time we were done. A quick snack in the lodge and back to reality. Note to self for next year... two easy trips out (approx 2 hrs ea) to start off should do me for getting back to conditioned and confident state. Thanks to all who came out, and to Richard and Jan for being the ski transporters for the day! -- Rhonda

| COC - Skiing at the Canmore Nordic Centre Beginners Well large group with no problems to manage. They all just blended into the trail like the group was two or three. Blink and they were gone. We divided it into two groups Intm. and Novice worked out real well my group even thou indicating new to the sport did really well never stopped and smiled all the way, Now Karl's group well who knows, its Carl after all.:) Thanks to all that came and a big thanks to Karl for his support and help with the Intermediate group. Take it away Karl. Roy Intermediate Group Thanks to Marty for picking out a great route. It was a loop of the outer trails and provided for a lot of fun and excitement. We all kept a steady pace and got a lot of practice on the hills. Some of the hills were pretty steep and were tough to climb but fun to descend. I had a good spill and knocked the wind out of myself. I swore I heard the sound of breaking glass when I crashed. Marty said it was my pride. Rhonda said it might have been my brain. I'm still not sure but I know my ribs are sore. The group made it back to the Nordic Center and everyone was still smiling. That's always a good sign. Probably had a lot to do with good company and great weather. Most of the intermediate people headed home at this time but a few of us decided to do another 5K. That was the icing on the cake and then we stopped by the Nordic Center to catch up with the rest of the group and share some stories. Not sure my GPS was correct. Cumulative elevation gain said 400 meters but profile indicated more like 225 meters or so. It felt like 400. Thanks to Roy for getting us off our couches and enjoying yet another great day in the Rockies. Karl CCC - High Performance Rodeo - One Yellow Rabbit\n The plan is to take in the Freak Show tour at 8pm, then make our way through the rest of the Carnival. For night owls, the Grandstand show starts at 11:00pm.\n Carnival of the Macabre (Free)\n- Duck under the Big Top to feast your eyes and ears on the freaky, creepy and carnivalesque. Step into the darker side of strange, as the Centre Court is transformed into a high-flying carnival. Chomp on a gourmet hot dog and steal a smooch at the kissing booth while testing your ick-factor with extreme piercers and contortionists. Daily scheduled events turn a spotlight on the bizarre, with sword-swallowers, tarot card readers and aerial acrobats, and the Midway Stage features circus musicians, spoken-word artists and dancers that delve into the twisted depths of your imagination.No single tent can contain the boiling chaos of a circus, and that’s where Freak Show comes in. The Swallow-a-Bicycle Performance Co-op hosts a cavalcade of Calgary’s freakiest emerging artists in an interactive tour through the bowels of the EPCOR CENTRE, from the Ledge to the Hall of Pillars.\n Grandstand - Collaborative Festival of Calgary Independent Music & Art ($14)\n- Calgary’s next-gen indie bands, unleashed on the Big Secret Theatre stage! Get your engines revving at Midway, then head to Grandstand where the party ignites. Calgary’s indie bands are getting play around the world, but their choicest, most explosive concerts are reserved for hometown crowds. What happens when you’ve got two bands, primed for greatness and you put them on stage together? Each night, local acts will pair up and storm the stage for unpredictable collaborations and wild experiments, spinning you down a radiant whirlpool of noise.\n11:00 PM Vailhalen, Woodpigeon, Dan Vacon with members of The Neighbourhood Council and Azeda Booth

| The Weaslehead natural area is a real gem within the city and one of my favorite urban hikes. It's almost as good as being out in the wilderness without the part about carpool and travel, and there's even a couple of hills to get the heart pumping. Judging from a laughter and chatter radiating throughout the group today it sounds like a good time was had by all. ~Marg

| Marty and I have been excited about trying night skiing at the Nordic Centre. We were bit by the bug on Marg's trip to Kimberly at Christmas 2006, and as soon as we confirmed the Nordic Center lit a few trails at night, we were IN! Bonus for us... seven other people were also \"IN\", and we had a fantastic time. It was a bit cool at -13, but not bad at all. The sky was perfectly clear and beautiful. A few brave skiiers went a short ways past the end of the lit trail and Sophie remarked it was the most beautiful thing she'd ever seen (everything was lit up from the moon). Note to us for next time, and for anyone else wanting to go... they shut the lights off at ten after nine. Carpooling at 5:30 would be better as we didn't actually start skiing 'til after 7:30. -- Rhonda

| COC - Belly of Steel CCC - Tuba & Trombone Appreciation Night (MAN - Tuba/Trombone Theme)\n Arrive at 6:30PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music selections at 7:00 (sorry, but to avoid interruption if you are later than 7:00, the door buzzer will be shut off and you won't be able to get in). We should have one CD of approximately 80 minutes of music (8 people times ten minutes of music). We will have a round-robin in which the first person will introduce their music, and then we’ll listen. After a short break, we’ll continue with the next person, and so on. \n My apartment is small, and the atmosphere casual. We'll be sitting or laying around the living room while we listen. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness.\n Everyone must contribute 6-10 minutes of music for the evening. If the evening has a “theme” (listed in the title), you should (but don’t have to) bring music that fits your interpretation of the theme. | Hilly Fun: Novice-Intermediate Ski, Slowwww Pace\n As far as skiing goes, it was a lovely day. Fantastic conditions, although a bit slow with a fresh dump of heavy snow. Excellent temperatures, beautiful snow-brushed scenery. As far as events go, it was a bit of a gong show, starting with a very delayed carpool depature because of roads/traffic conditions, and then an hour-long delay at trailhead when one car went MIA and the rest of the group went to an alternate trailhead (ironically, the MIA car pulled into the far end of the original trailhead at the exact same moment as the rest of us were pulling out, which is why we never found each other). Thanks to Diane for taking her group out for a ski while the rest of us did another route. We did run into them on about our third-to-last kilometer, so at least we all knew everyone was ok/safe. -- Rhonda Night Skiing at the Canmore Nordic Centre

| 2008-01-20: COC - Urban Hike - Walk around the Glenmore Reservoir | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The hike started off a bit on the chilly side with the winds sweeping across the Reservoir. Once we hit the trees however the temperature (which sat around -16 before the windchil) did not seem so bad. The pathway through the Weaslehead was snow covered requiring a little more effort than on the cleared sections and yes, Rhonda - you were in the fast group! At the end of the hike warming up at Good Earth with a bite to eat everyone had rosy cheeks; all were relaxed and content after a good outing.

We windowshopped up and down the streets in Kensington and managed to look but not buy at Crave cupcakes. We stopped for coffee at the homey Heartland Cafe and couldn't resist visiting one consignment clothing shop before we all disbursed home. Thank you for a pleasant outing of walking and talking. | CCC - Steve McQueen Band at Bugaboo Creek + Michelle's Birthday\n A band started by singer/songwriter Steve McQueen (real name), who has been bringing a tonic blend of power soul and arena rock style to rave reviews from audiences for the last few years.\n \nThe sound is a hybrid of classic rock influences with a modern approach, creating something new and improved taking today's rock n' roll to a whole new level. The songwriting is passionate and down to earth with at times, a working class sensibility to it. It has been described as hypnotically melodic, yet bravely diversified.\n \nThere may be guests attending who are not members of the CCC.\n CCC - Stepping Out at Pumphouse Theatre\n Stepping Out is a funny play about the lives, laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy church hall. Voted Comedy of the Year by the London Evening Standard in 1984.\n \"...the observations so acute, the tiffs so human, the revelations so likely.\" Daily Telegraph\n When I was selecting the shows I wanted to see this season, I picked this one because of my own experiences teaching adult tap dancing classes. It didn't occur to me, however, that I would recognize one of my own students performing in the show! I taught a class in spring of 2006 and had a family sign up together - they're all performers in Calgary's amateur theatre and wanted to take some tap dancing to add to their acting resumes. Well, color me surprised to recognize the father putting his skills to good use in the show! It was a proud, proud moment for me. :)\n Thanks to everyone who came out to the show with me. \n -- Rhonda

| 2008-02-17: COC - Back Side of Blueberry Hill | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This was one of my absolute favorite snow shoe days ever, if not one of my favorite days ever. The weather was perfect with mild temps and brilliant blue skies to complement the thick forest heavy with fresh snow. With Marko and his GPS along, we were able to easily find a good route on the hill, and did a loop, rather than an in-and-out, going up to the tip of Blueberry hill from the east side, paused for lunch at the picnic table at the end of the x-c ski trail, then down the west side ending up at the bank of Upper Kananaskis Lake where we popped onto the short x-c ski trail back to Elk Pass trailhead. We got to experience first-hand what an unstable snow pack was like (without any actual avalanche danger) with about two feet of new heavy snow sitting on the rotten, hollow old snow of days gone by. The conditions made our trips up, and down, very challenging (if you don't believe me, ask Laurel and Garry), but in the end, everyone was a fantastic trouper, and in spite of my doubts, we all made it safely up, and then down, the challenge of our day, Blueberry Hill. The air was pierced occasionally by none other than our newly dubbed \"Wil Hung\" (named, of course, for his singing, which in no way actually resembles the singing of William Hung of American Idol fame). At the pub after the event, we took more than a little joy in explaining, in politically correct terms, the natural double entrendre in the brilliant name to our Wil, who, being an English-Not-As-A-First-Language speaker did not immediately grasp the implied compliment being bestowed on him. And in fact, this was not the only new nickname handed out today. After... geez... um... YEARS... of successfully dodging a nickname of any sort, \"Whiskey Jack\" (former name \"Marko\") was casually dubbed by Jordin who pointed out \"Whiskey Jack\"'s penchant for accepting, sometimes even aggressively pursuing, leftovers and handouts from other hikers. Although \"Wil Hung\" and \"Whiskey Jack\" decided that Jordin must immediately be banished from their events, I personally decided that Jordin's presence was an absolute requirement on any and all of my future events so that we do not miss out on any potentially brilliant new nicknames. A million, or more, sincere thanks to \"Whiskey Jack\" for his route finding efforts (as well as a few pull-the-flailing-snow-shoer-up-the-hill efforts) today, and of course to all the other heros of the day who lent hands, pulled up stuck or sliding snow shoers, dug out buried legs, gave push-ups from behind, built snowy stairs up the hill, and so on and so on. Teamwork at it's best. :) -- Rhonda

| 2008-03-14: EOC - Urban Hike - Whitemud Park North | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This Friday afternoon hike is one that can only be described as a great time. Matching outfits, Boinking, and surprise guests. Whitemud Park is a nice escape from the city. There are plenty of trees and a creek. According to the Calgary folks they thought the trees would never stop and after a while claustrophobia set in and they could not wait to retreat the wide open spaces of the parking lot. Although it is winter every time I think of this event I hear “Boink”, “Boink”, “Boink” in my mind. Is that even how you spell boink??? According to spell checker no! We met Shelton on the way out and although against club policy to let a non-registered person on to an event we let him join anyway since he was good friends with Rhonda. On the last section of the return hike we had another friend of Rhonda visit us. Her name was Little Bridgette. All I know is Rhonda has many many friends. If you were not on this hike you can only imagine how interesting these people we met were. Thank you for coming out Calgary you are great fun. Mint Julip

| COC Volunteer Info and Social Teleport to Wolf 562 c for sight-seeing and light hiking\n I trust you'll find it rather conveinient that 'My Imaginary Friend' has a portable teleportation device, and that we'll be able to manage our possible double bookings, by using the time feature as well. I was amazed by the spring in my steps on this hike. It felt like I was a kid again, bouncing around with ample power. - Cynthia Wow, an event without a Mitko and his Bulgarian flag! I heard their bears were also out early. Fortunately, some of us packed our stun guns. Unfortunately, some of us forgot to register them & they were confiscated by Teleport Security :( So stay in tight groups of 50! Are there outhouses here? And are they the old-styled suction or new gravity-controlled? So this is what I mortgaged my house to see/hike?! I could have gone to see Boy George for a lot less! - Wendy CCC - Make Your Culture Club Experience Complete! Meet Boy George!\n We will have the rare and exciting opportunity to meet... ok, maybe \"meet\" is a bit strong... but at least \"see\" Boy George, possibly from a great distance, at a secret location in Europe. Exact meetup directions will be provided via e-mail. \n That's right! After two years of using his 80's band's name to our benefit, we will finally get to meet (ok, maybe just see) our favorite Karma Chameleon, Boy! Don't make Mistake Number 3, or give me the Cold Shoulder! Join me at the Church of the Poison Mind and we'll all Tumble 4 Boy!\n As a friend of Mr. Ciaro, who got me backstage, I was able to ask Boy George about the club's name and his feelings on it. He said it was alright, but he perferred the 'indoor club'. Mr. Roebotto, my other guest, is very gratefull and says, Thank you!\n - Cynthia\n We had a great turn-out, and thanks to Cynthia's back-stage connections, we got much closer to Boy George than we ever expected. It is so nice after all this time wondering that he approves of our use of the name 'Culture Club'. We have often received the suggestion from David M, as well as Boy George, to change our name to 'Indoor Club', but hey, we've gone to outdoor concerts and plays and stuff, so David and Boy can just live with it.\n Thanks to Cynthia for getting all 65 of us back stage into Boy's dressing room (what happens in the dressing room stays in the dressing room) and to Lori for being the official club photographer!\n - Rhonda\n\n

| 2008-04-02: CCC - The Pirates Of Penzance at Pumphouse Theatre | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan.\n\n In The Pirates Of Penzance, Frederic was as a child apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted orphaned pirates by his nurse who, being hard of hearing, had mistaken her master's instructions to apprentice the boy to a pilot. Frederic, upon completing his 21st year, rejoices that he has fulfilled his indenture and is now free to return to respectable society. But it turns out that he was born on February 29 in a leap year, and he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and he will not reach his 21st birthday until he is in his eighties. By the end of the opera, the pirates -- a major general who knows nothing of military strategy, his large family of beautiful but unwed daughters, and the timid constabulary -- all contribute to a cacophony that can be silenced only by Queen Victoria's name. \n Note to Rhonda: tickets are held at the door in my name\n Yarrrrrr! Easily the best show I've seen in a long time. Great acting and singing. The two kids were fantastic, and the show included more than one brilliant 'paradox'.\n - Rhonda

| Ahhhhhhhhh... hiking. I've missed it so. And yet I probably won't be doing a lot of it over the next while as I apparently still have to put some care and attention into \"Little Bridget\" (the discomfort in my piriformis muscle). It was a beautiful day today with lovely warm temperatures and great company. Thank goodness we all had our icers today - all four of us made it up to the lookoff by the big solar-panel-microwave-tower-station-thingy with relative ease. On the way back down, Lana and Len found a track which we tried to identify, and narrowed it down to either Saskwatch or Dik Dik but since none of us had our animal track book, we couldn't be sure. Thanks to the intrepid three for joining me today. I really really really needed a mountain fix! -- Rhonda

| 2008-04-05: CCC - The Other Boleyn Girl | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We will meet at the ticket between 11:50 and 12:05. Movie starts at 12:25. \n \nTwo sisters, Anne and Mary Boleyn, are driven by their ambitious Father and Uncle to advance the family's power and status by courting the affections of the King of England. Leaving behind the simplicity of country life, the girls are thrust into the dangerous and thrilling world of court life--and what began as a bid to help their family develops into a ruthless rivalry between Anne and Mary for the love of the King. Initially, Mary wins King Henry's favor and becomes his mistress, bearing him two illegitimate children. But Anne, clever, conniving and fearless, edges aside both her sister and Henry's wife, Queen Katherine of Aragon, in her relentless pursuit of the King. Despite Mary's genuine feelings for Henry, her sister Anne has her sights set on the ultimate prize; Anne will not stop until she is Queen of England. As the Boleyn girls battle for the love of a King--one driven by ambition, the other by true affection--England is torn apart. Oh my... I guess I officially owe Joel two hours of his life that he'll never get back. He is kinder than me, and gives the movie more points than I do, which still isn't saying much.\n I think the biggest problem is that they had too much information to pack into a short amount of time. Instead of being a compelling, well-told story, it was a two-hour stream of strung-together scenes of schemes, betrayals, confrontations and seductions. I would have been better off staying home and watching The Young and The Restless re-runs.\n Some of the characters were well played. The father, the mother, Mary Boleyn (played by Scarlett Johannson) and Catherine (the first queen) were well done. The biggest spaghetti, I thought, was the king. From one scene to the next his behavior and feelings did not seem consistent at all, and his character was written as though he had nothing else in the world to do but flit from one woman to the next for one reason after another. What happened to running the country? Waging battles? Doing ANYTHING kingly?\n Bah! Save your time, and your money. \n - Rhonda

| 2008-04-08: CCC - Dinner and a Book Club (The Revenge of Gaia @ Marathon Ethiopian) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Read The Revenge of Gaia by James Lovelock and discuss it over dinner at Marathon Ethiopian. \n While economists, politicians and some scientists are still debating whether global warming is being caused by human activity (nevermind whether global warming is even happening at all), James Lovelock treats it as a foregone conclusion, and all that is left to debate/decide is what, if anything, we can and should do about it. He says:\n - Neither faith in God nor trust in business as usual, nor even commitment to sustainable development, acknoledges our true dependence; if we fail to take care of the Earth, it surely will take care of itself by making us no longer welcome.\n - To expect sustainable development or a trust in business as usual to be viable policies is like expecting a lung cancer victim to be cured by stopping smoking; both measures deny the existence of the Earth's disease, the fever brought on by a plague of people.\n - We will not sustain civilization by abandoning technology. We have instead to use it wisely, with the health of the Earth, not the health of people, in mind. This is why it is much too late for sustainable development; what we need is a sustainable retreat.\n All informed opinions will be welcome. Personal attacks and soap-boxing will not. We pretty much unanimously agreed that this was not one of our favorite books. For a scientific writer, the data evidence to back up some of his claims were not provided, even in a scanty fashion. He calls for drastic changes in human activity on a global scale but leaves absolutely no \"to dos\" for individuals or states on how to make anything happen. Writing a book to scare people without offering any action items is completely ineffective. I liked how one critic put is: \"Would anyone dare to put on a rock concert with the slogan 'Make poverty the future'?\"\n Some great conversation came out of it, though, and most agreed they were glad to have read the book even if they didn't stand behind it. And the dinner, well, Marathon is always good, and we did enjoy it although it seemed a bit bland compared to its usual spicy goodness.\n -- Rhonda

| 2008-04-12: COC - Charity Garage Sale, and CCC - Group Karaoke! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| COC - Mustard Seed MEGA HUGE Charity Garage Sale This is grassroots volunteerism at its best. When I first noticed this event on the COC calendar, I thought isn't that nice… Jim is helping at a Mustard Seed garage sale and is recruiting COC members to help out as well. After getting involved, though, I realized this isn't really a Mustard Seed thing at all - although all of the proceeds go to them – it is purely a Jim thing, driven by his tireless energy and personal vendetta against waste. Approximately twice a year since 2000, Jim hosts a \"mega huge\" garage sale, collecting merchandise from various sources, including donations from friends, neighbors, other garage sales and, because of google, internet strangers. Month end moving days for Sunnyside apartment blocks are also a prime source. His first garage sales were smaller, and powered mainly by Jim, family, true blue old friends Dorothy, Madeline, O.J. and Melanie. In 2000, they raised $250 which was donated to the Mustard Seed Street Ministry (http://www.theseed.ca) and over the years the sales have grown in size to where they now bring in over $6000/year and are powered by dozens of recruited volunteers who haul out the loot, put it on display, and make the sales. Items are not priced individually, rather, customers are encouraged to decide for themselves how much to donate for their new treasures, and assisted in determining a price by the volunteers if asked. On the Thursday and Friday before the sale, Jim and some of his recruits begin getting things ready, including gathering the merchandise into Jim's garage from where it's been stashed in his basement, neighbor garages and neighbor basements, and putting up tarp awnings. At around 7AM on Saturday, the fun really begins as Jim ramps up and races around a million miles an hour hauling larger items out for display. Neighbor, Marilyn, steps in to help as foreman, directing other volunteers in where to get and place merchandise, and the rest of us peons try to make ourselves useful (and stay out of the way). On this particular Saturday, volunteers were rewarded with a very tasty lunch of egg salad sandwiches (honestly, the best sandwiches I've ever tasted) from Marilyn and stroganoff from Jim. After the two day sale ends, any items which are left over are donated to a couple of different charities including Women In Need. Upon reviewing my write-up, Jim would like to add the following to the “superstar” list: - The weatherman who gave us a spectacularly beautiful weekend - Jill and Brent who stopped by with yummy muffin treats - Me (for helping set up on Friday and coming early on Saturday to help again, I guess) - Roy for his garage sale talent and poker face dealing with the public - Pat Kearns for donating Tim Horton’s coffee - Kathy for hanging in ‘til 6PM with Jim and Marilyn - All the people who said “I didn’t see anything for me” and then slipped Jim a $20 for the Mustard Seed anyway - All his other recruits and helpers who may not have been mentioned individually -- Rhonda CCC - Group Karaoke! (Music Appreciation Night)\n You know those bands...the ones you just can't help but sing-a-long with or hum or lip sync or what the heck, even make up your own words occassionaly! If there's a little ditty you sing in the shower every morning, or maybe you've been to another music event with the club and were just dying to belt out a tune (Joel???) then this event is for you! Group participation is welcome but you're welcome to just listen and laugh if you prefer. You might not even know the lyrics but then again, they'll be posted on the wall so unless you can't read... \nBy the way, if you're not lucky enough to get a seat on the couch or a chair then you're sitting on the HARDWOOD floor so bring something comfy if you can -- there's room to plop down a couple of bean bag chairs if you have them. \nArrive at 7:30 PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music selections at 8 PM (sorry, but to avoid interruption if you are later than 8 PM you will not be allowed in). We will have 1 CD of approximately 80 minutes of music (8 people times 8-10 minutes of music). We will take a few minutes for everyone to introduce their music selections. \n Most of my house is not carpeted and may feel cool at times. You may want to bring slippers, a sweater or anything else that will keep you cozy. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness. \n Everyone must contribute 8-10 minutes of music for the evening. If the evening has a “theme” (listed in the title), you should (but don’t have to) bring music that fits your interpretation of the theme. Many of our themes are DELIBERATELY ambiguous for maximum creativity!

| 2008-04-13: COC - Horseshoe Canyon by Drumheller | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is a great hike to do in April when mountain options are limited. It's warm - a nice appetizer for upcoming summer hiking, and an interesting change of scenery. There were a few spring flowers, including lots of crocuses, and one odd yellowish sunflower-like thing. We didn't see any ticks today, though(unless someone found one after the hike), which was nice. We entered the canyon on the west side of the parking lot, and followed the well-worn trails back to the far end of the canyon where it narrows into a single stream. We followed the narrow part of the canyon for as far as we could - about 3.5km all together, then turned around and headed back. At an opportune spot, we climbed up out of the canyon and followed the farm field along the rim for a while until we found another decent spot to re-descend into the canyon. Heading out, we hung to the east side of the canyon, and then hiked back to the parking lot. -- Rhonda

Watch as the intrepid acrobats battle the clock and their own limits as they tumble, fly, contort, juggle and balance. A spectacle of joyous intensity - this is CIRCA at its most engaging. Their promotional material calls Circa Ensemble \"a spectacle of joyous intensity - this is Circa at its most engaging\" and I would have to agree. The four performers, David, Darcy, James and Chelsea, are charming, funny and very very talented (and holy smokes... did you catch the pipes on their \"very very strong guy\", James???). I can't imagine anyone not liking this show - my back didn't touch my seat the whole time. LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The CCC Video Awards are brought to you by ratio:marketing. There will be other people joining us that haven't signed up on this site. These awards are the culmination of hard work by amateur teams of CCC members who just wanna be in pictures. If you are on one of teams making a video your name is already on our guest list, so no need to sign up for this event. Come out and see what's been created! This event is almost free - all you need to do is bring a non perishable food donation in support of local charities. A Food Donation box is located in the foyer of the Cardel Theatre where items can be dropped off before entering the event. Because it's an event reminiscent of the Oscars, come dressed in your biggest and boldest style. Glam it up, make it as wacky as possible or show up in 80's retro (in honor of \"The Boy\"). Of course, you can always show up as your own celebrity self! An EXCLUSIVE after-party is planned. Details will be revealed at the event. Lights, camera, action! \n\nJust a few weeks ago, keen CCC members got together to team up and make a video for the very first ever COC Video Awards. Tonight's event turned out to be really fun as it gave everyone the chance to see what the teams came up with. \n\nThe crowd snacked on popcorn while watching The Abridged Urban Cowboy, Culture Lost and Found and The Alberta Song. Everyone then had the chance to vote for their favorite video before the awards began. \n\nOutside judges picked the awards in the following categories: \n\nBest Picture: Culture Lost and Found \nBest Actor: Cameron Bueckert \nBest Actress: Jo-Ann Allen \nBest Director: Neil Speers \nBest Original Score: Neil Speers \nBest Newcomer: David Meisner \nBest Virtual Bull: Ken Fung \nBest Videographer: Neil Speers \nBest Coaching from the Wings: Toni Guffei \n\nThe Audience Choice was given to The Abridged Urban Cowboy \n\nThanks to everyone who played a part, submitted a video, volunteered to help out and came out to the awards event. We're going to do it again next year, but with more time given to get teams together. Watch for the more details in the coming months. \n\nPhotographs are now uploaded (click on View Album)...thanks to Ken Fung (whose contribution helped to make this event a great success!)

From the guy who brought you Super Size Me. For his follow-up, Spurlock wades back into controversial waters, and attempts something even more dangerous than a month of eating Big Macs: he decides to hunt down the globe's foremost terrorist, Osama Bin Laden.\n If Morgan Spurlock has learned anything from over 30 years of movie-watching, it's that if the world needs saving, it's best done by one lone man willing to face danger head on to take it down, action hero style. So, with no military experience, knowledge or expertise, he sets off to do what the CIA, FBI and countless bounty hunters have failed to do: find the world's most wanted man.\n View the trailer: http://www.thetrailer.com. It was raining in Calgary all morning, lighter, and heavier, and lighter and heavier. Heading out of town, we could see darkness and gloom on some sides, and brightness and optimism on other sides. The gloom seemed to follow us as we chased the brightness all the way out to Drumheller with Stripey (aka \"Sunshine\") waxing poetic about how it was going to clear on time for the concert, but when we pulled into Drumheller, the sky socked in and the rain picked up. We were instructed to pull into a parking area and wait in the vehicle for a shuttle bus to take us to the venue \"if the rain let up\". We waited a few minutes before heading back into town to find civilized facilities, and then headed back, but as we approached, we saw a steady stream of vehicles coming FROM the venue. That, plus the RIVERS that used to be STREETS convinced us that our event should be moved to the Irish Pub we saw on the way into town. Back to the pub, where a meal and beverage were enjoyed by all. No Beethoven for us today, but we did get to hear \"Lick It Up\" by \"Kiss\" in the pub. \n My next to-do is to find out what, if any, recourse we have with CPO. Perhaps we will be offered a refund or credit of some sort as I don't believe the concert actually took place.\n Thanks to all who joined me for another great event gone sideways.\n - Rhonda

| My first post-injury hike was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who joined me, and especially for their patience with my extreme-slowness today. What a relief to finally be able to start getting back out there! And we were blessed with fantastic weather, with the forecast being bang-on that the weather would be beautiful in the morning, and starting some rain in the afternoon... we were done hiking by noon... perfect timing! -- Rhonda

| Summer has finally arrived in the Rockies !!!! I had no expectations from this little hike that I posted except for fresh air with spectacular views of Mount Rundle & Cascade Mountain as written in trail books – so you can imagine my surprise as I arrived at the trailhead to find a little oasis, nature at its fullest. This beautiful lake in the middle of the mountains, lush greenery surrounding it, and crystal clear water – and best of all, nobody around. There is a picnic area, so some people do know about it !!!! Once the group from Calgary arrived, they were surprised as well. We chitchatted at the trailhead in awe of this little oasis. We started our gentle walk to the left side of the lake. The trail meanders above the shoreline, and sometimes away into the forest that surrounds the lake. We stopped many many times along the way to inhale nature’s beauty. So many big smiles !!!! The lake was so calm today that the reflections from the forest and mountains were astounding to say the least – I don’t think there is a word to describe what we saw today – you really really had to be there to see it. It took us approx 2 hours to complete our loop around the lake with our frequent stops. Once back at the trailhead, we headed to the restaurant for lunch. Once again we were surprised for the second time of the day - a wedding procession was beginning on the patio of the bistro as we arrived. The bride was dressed in a beautiful satin gown, and lovely yellow flowers were in her hands. As we sat at our table on the patio, the wedding ceremony was taking place. After a short ceremony, the groom & bride were pronounced Husband & Wife !! I’ve come across bride & grooms getting their wedding photos at a few hiking events, but never a ceremony !! I asked Rhonda if this was a first for the club, and she believes so !!! Our food was gourmet and good !! Most of us had the bison burger. And last, but certainly not least, I am delighted that the weather cooperated today so that the group could set their eyes on the best view in the entire Bow Valley !!! Thank you for joining me today…. I had a wonderful time and hope you did too !! Encounters on the trail: An oasis, birds, chipmunks, small & big fish, wildflowers, lots & lots of reflections on the lake, other hikers, Rhonda’s beetle (not Paul or Ringo !!), and a wedding ceremony !! Happy Trails :)

| 2008-06-27: COC - Waterton: Camping/Hiking Trip | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We drew a scorcher this weekend with absolutely no wind. What are the odds??!! It is Waterton, after all. A few of us arrived early on Friday and did the boat tour of Upper Waterton Lake which was a gentle introduction to the weekend. On Saturday, about half the group did Crypt Lake, and the other half did Bertha Lake. I was on the Bertha Lake group and although some of the views were great, I found it to be a bit of a grunt up to get to most of the views. On Sunday, some of us stuck around to hike Lineham Creek, which I personally loved. It has stunning views for more than half the trip in - bonus - and was a refreshing but not-too-difficult 8.2km round with 350m of elevation gain. The only disappointment is that the trail ends well away from the waterfall which is obstructed by trees. Some people cared a lot more about that than I did... the other views were just so fantastic that I didn't give a rip about the waterfall. But that's just me... I don't normally give that much of a rip about waterfalls anyway. Thanks to everyone who came out - it was a fantastic weekend! -- Rhonda It was a great weekend, good company, awesome weather and the organizational talent of our Rhonda made it all the better. The Trip to Crypt lake was a good long hike starting of with a boatride, than a long haul trough the forest and ending at the lake after enduring snow slides on the trail, climbing a ladder, crawling through a tunnel and holding on for dear life to a cable that was the only thing between you and the bottom of the ravine where a waterfall was roaring it's way to the waterton lake. We all made it to Crypt lake. Some of us looked like professional photographers (and hopefully some pictures will show their incredible talents, just look of the cracker picture :). In the evening we all hang out at the campfire doing the normal tete à tete and waving frantically to each other and the mosquitoes. Lineham Creek; a very beautiful hike, ended NOT at the waterfall (darn it) but in the middle of nowhere, 4 trails going towards it and ALL of them ending nowhere. Now I must say the views again where awesome even from a short distance and the company made up for everything else. Cheers, Wil This camping trip was my first COC event and I definitely plan to attend more in the near future. I felt welcome, and there was freedom for everybody to choose to do what they liked. Thank you all for your company during the weekend. And Rhonda, thank you for all your organizing work. See you, Liesbeth.

We encountered a very accommodating marmot who was more than willing to pose for us. All in all, a fabulous day in the mountains and THE Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth! | Iron Springs EASY MTN BIKING\n After months of inactivity, I should have realized I was biting off more than I could chew with this event today, but I didn't, and it all turned out ok anyway. I didn't get abandoned on the trail to live out my days begging food from hikers and bikers (Marty estimated that I'd need to gain about 800 pounds to hibernate through the winters). I had a great time, with a great group, and I learned the most important things about the sport of mountain biking from Lori. Some of my favorites: 1) I'm only walking my bike up this hill to work different muscle groups 2) To increase my speed, I only have to master the farmer blow. I don't have to worry about increasing leg strength, lung capacity, overall stamina or skill... I just have to master that farmer blow. Much easier - thanks for the tip! I'll get right on it! -- Rhonda This was one of the best rides I have been on what a great group!!! I am glad I could help you out Rhonda! When's our next one!!! -- Lori Reasons to Celebrate - Duane's 39 and Sibel and Jeff are Getting Hitched! Theme: Fashion Police\n Thank you Rhonda and Jill for setting up this event, and Duane for sharing your day with Jeff and I. Thank you all for coming, and what a great evening it was! We were so fortunate with the good weather! I was glad to be able to provide a good venue - the fire was awesome - you should have seen the pile of ash the morning after!! What a greast evening - I too enjoyed seeing everyone, catching up, and can't wait to see all the photos!! Sibel I just want to say that I was VERY impressed with the creative ideas that showed up for the Fashion Police theme. We were long overdue for a theme party and I was not disappointed with the great enthusiasm and willingness to make complete dorks of themselves that attendees showed. Thanks to everyone for a great time! Rhonda

| COC - Half-Jumpingpound: EASY/SLOW MTB Duhn duhn..... duhn duhn.... duhn-duhn.dUHN-dUHN.DUHN-NUHN-NUHN-NUHN-NUHN-NUHN... That's the theme from \"Jaws\", by the way, and it was the sound made today by the brake lever of my mountain bike piercing the otherwise lovely calm day. Today, of course, was my first return to Jumpingpound since that day. Perhaps I was a tad hyper-aware of that fact myself but I know that my companions for the day were spell-bound by my endless stories about the bizarre accident, how it happened, and the equally bizarre healing process. Yes, they were. OK, maybe not so much, but they put up with me, and I think they all had a fantastic time, and I KNOW I had a fantastic time. Thanks to Marty for taking me and some other newbies and pokies out for a fantastic ride today, sticking only to the easy half of Jumpingpound. I will return to the more difficult side one day... but I'll save that for another time. -- Rhonda CCC - Dinner and Book Club (Audience of Chairs @ La Dolce Vita)\n Come have dinner at La Dolce Vita (916 1 Ave NE) and discuss Audience of Chairs (2005) with the author Joan Clark.\n\n

| After a few minutes on the switchbacks, we split easily into a \"faster slow group\" and a \"slower slow group\". Rita and Pam graciously accepted the task of taking charge of the \"faster slow group\" and their group trouped all the way up to just below the final ascent to the ridge. My group... the \"slower slow group\" made it easily to my intended destination - lunch just above the cable/fence. After the hike, Pam won everyone's hearts with suggestions of a 'stretch our legs' walk around Forgetmenot Pond, and then ice cream in Bragg Creek. -- Rhonda

| Chester Lake\n I can't believe this was my first time up to Chester in the summer. I've gone up there a couple of times in the fall, and a bunch of times in the winter, but this was the first time in the summer. It is an amazingly beautiful place, and you can get there with really not that much effort. Thanks to Neva for taking the \"slightly faster\" group today while I did my usual \"slightly slower\" pace with a few others. Lots of exploring on the Elephant Rocks (only my second time there) and then back to town in plenty of time for Barry's football game event tonight! Shockingly, no one was interested in stopping in at the new casino to get drunk and lose the mortgage payments before we came home. -- Rhonda Calgary Stampeders vs Hamilton Pussycats Football Game

The weather was perfect again, high twenties and sunny; it is as if the rafting Gods have looked favorably upon this event these past years. The water war began onshore before the first raft even touched the river and continued incessantly until the take-out location on the shores of Inglewood. Comments:
