2012-01-12: ECC - Bird MAN (Music Appreciation Night)

Bird MAN (Music Appreciation Night). What is a MAN? It is an opportunity to get together with other music enthusiasts and be exposed to music that you might not otherwise know about. In other words, it's awesome.

I first started coordinating MANs with the Calgary Culture Club several years ago, but the true origins of my music appreciation events goes back to high school. My grade 10 drama teacher was a very cool guy, and one thing he would do is spend the first few minutes of every class playing some kind of interesting or unusual music for us and we would lay about on the floor just listening... and then we'd talk about the music... and then we would go on with drama class. If Steve Carney, who taught drama at LTCHS in Red Deer in 1981/1982 happens to see this, please contact me. I'd love for you to know that your class had this impact on my life!

The Culture Club music appreciation events are meant to be a similar experience, although we usually sit rather than laying around, and we often visit and socialize during the music (unlike in grade 10 drama class).

All attendees submit up to 12 minutes of music that they enjoy and would like to share with others. Often the events have a theme, and sometimes they don't. When we have a theme, it might be genre-specific (ie. Blues MAN), it might be instrument-specific (ie. Sax MAN), or it might be more open to interpretation (ie. Perfect MAN, Hoochie Koochie MAN or Mystery MAN). The point is to share music you enjoy with others who you think would appreciate the opportunity to discover it. It's not a test! Choose music that you would like to share. If we have a theme, try to choose music that fits your interpretation of the theme.

On the night of the event, we'll convene at our home to share some snacks and listen to everyone's music submissions. We can accommodate up to 8 local folk, and up to 8 more will be allowed to attend \"virtually\". To attend virtually, you must submit your music by the cut-off the same as everyone else and all music submissions will be shared. Only the songs submitted by the people who attend in person will be played at the event (in the interest of time).

Arrive at 6:30PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music at 7:00 with a quick round-robin to introduce our songs, then we'll listen to the music selections.

Our home is small, and the atmosphere casual. We'll be sitting or laying around the living room while we listen. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness.

Everyone must contribute 8-12 minutes of music for the event.

2012-01-16: ECC - The Iron Lady
NOTE: Some of the attendees will be meeting for a quick bite to eat at the Elephant and Castle pub (next to the cinema) from about 6:00pm onwards. Feel free to join us - my cell number is 780 983 9374.

Come see \"The Iron Lady\" movie, which is on limited release in Edmonton.

The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, is a biographical British film about former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, portrayed by Meryl Streep.
Margaret Thatcher was the UK's first (and to date only) female Prime Minister, and was in office between 1979 and 1990.
Thatcher's husband, Denis Thatcher, is portrayed by Jim Broadbent, and Thatcher's longest-serving cabinet member and eventual deputy, Geoffrey Howe, is portrayed by Anthony Head.

To date, Meryl Streep has recieved plaudits for her performance, so we will head along and see for ourselves.

We will attend the 7:25pm showing on Monday 16th January - meet outside the cinema between 7:00-7:10pm, to give us time to buy tickets and choose seats.
General admission is $12.50

2012-01-23: EOC - Steep/Climbing Terrain Backpack Conditioning Adventure
2012-01-25: ECC - Edmonton Restaurant Tour: Bistro Praha
Join us for dinner at Bistro Praha. Bistro Praha is the place to go if you want a warm atmosphere, authentic goulash, cabbage soup, wiener schnitzel or a range of European style dishes.

Reservation will be under \"Rhonda\".

Note that ECC policy is to add 23% to the bill to cover 5% GST plus 18% gratuity. We try to get separate bills whenever we can, but that is usually not possible. The coordinator will calculate everyone's total based on what they ordered plus the 23%. If you disagree with this policy, please do not register for this event.

2012-01-30: EOC - Steep/Climbing Terrain Backpack Conditioning Adventure
2012-02-01: ECC - TED Night

Join us for a night of TED. From Wikipedia: TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate \"ideas worth spreading.\"

Normally we choose two videos of about 20 minutes each, but this time we'll do three videos of approximately 10 minutes each:

Video 1: David Gallo on life in the deep oceans
With vibrant video clips captured by submarines, David Gallo takes us to some of Earth's darkest, most violent, toxic and beautiful habitats, the valleys and volcanic ridges of the oceans' depths, where life is bizarre, resilient and shockingly abundant.

Video 2: Joshua Klein on the intelligence of crows
Hacker and writer Joshua Klein is fascinated by crows. (Notice the gleam of intelligence in their little black eyes?) After a long amateur study of corvid behavior, he's come up with an elegant machine that may form a new bond between animal and human.

Video 3: Theo Jansen creates new creatures
Artist Theo Jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures he builds from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. His creatures are designed to move -- and even survive -- on their own.

Arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:30. We'll spend about 10 minutes watching each video, and up to 30 minutes discussing each, as it is a school night.

Our home is small and humble... be prepared to get cozy... some of us will probably end up sitting on the floor.

2012-02-06: EOC - Steep/Climbing Terrain Backpack Conditioning Adventure
2012-02-23: ECC - Miracle Fruit Potluck
Miracle Fruit is an interesting fruit from Africa which, after eating it, makes sour foods taste sweet. Effects last for about one hour and vary by individual.

Join us to experience the phenomenon for yourself. Unfortunately, we're not able to get fresh Miracle Fruit (it has an extremely short shelf life), but your coordinator has purchased some \"Miracle Fruities\" tablets which are made from dried miracle fruit and have the same effect. Place one tablet in your mouth and gently swirl it around with your tongue until dissolved. Once you have consumed your Miracle Fruit, the tasting can begin!

From Taste Trippin' with Miracle Berries, \"Miracle Berries are a West African fruit with the unusual property of making sour and bitter foods taste sweet. It’s unknown exactly how the process works, but an active glycoprotein binds to bitter and sour taste receptors on your tongue, temporarily disabling them. This allows you to taste food in a completely different way. Lemons taste like lemonaid, blackberries taste like candy, and Guinness tastes like chocolate milk.\"

This was our first-ever time trying Miracle Fruit, and it was a lot of fun! \"Miracle Fruit is an interesting fruit from Africa which, after eating it, makes sour foods taste sweet. Effects last for about one hour and vary by individual.\"

Seven adventurous folk gathered at our place this evening, bringing an amazing assortment of goodies. We sampled many of the goodies as a \"before\" tasting, then we ate our Miracle Fruit tablets, then we sampled everything again, with very interesting results.

2012-03-16: ECC - Beverly Height Variety Show
The Beverly Heights Variety show has been in productions for over 40 years. The 2012 version is called \"In My Pefect World\" It is a series of jokes and skits with a few musical numbers thrown in. It contains some off-color humor but it is all fun and gaeity. I've been there the past 2 years and want to go again. I hope that you can join me. Payment required by Thursday March 16 at the community hall.. I have 2 tickets for myself at a table that can seat many more (up to 30)

Twas a hoot and a giggle. Next year, let's plan earlier and bring our own snack packages. There was some great looking spreads out there.

2012-03-17: ANDWA - Ink Pots via Moose Meadows - slow pace
11km and 220m elev gain seems innocent enough for a snowshoe. We figure information is missing in all the descriptions .... the part where it feels more like about ~300+m elev gain, then ~100m elev loss, then ~100m elev gain, and ~300+m elev loss. Someday when I figure out how to do it, I'll record the trip on a gps and take a closer look at the total amt of loss/gain. \n\n
Still, I like this hike very much in winter. For my pace, plan on spending about 6 hrs to include time for photos and enjoying the ink pots.\n\n

2012-03-24: EOC - Dawson Park to Capilano Park Loop Urban Hike

We had a lovely, sunny urban hike. We started on the north side of the river from Dawson Park to Capilano Park looping back around on the south side of the river.

We went approx. 9.5km in about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Afterwards all 11 of us headed off to Brewsters for some well deserved lunch.

Thanks for coming out & hope to see you again!

2012-03-27: ECC - Edmonton Restaurant Tour: Langano Skies (Ethiopian)
Join us for dinner at Langano Skies Ethiopian Restaurant. The last Tuesday of the month is their Vegetarian Buffet. They DO NOT take reservations for buffet night - it is first come first serve. We'll take our chances. Please be there promptly for 6:30 and look for the coordinator. If you don't know me, I will be wearing a white with black ECC bandana.

Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal, eaten with your hands, and served up in the form of a stew containing lots of exotic spices. Each meal is accompanied by soft injera bread.

Ethiopian cuisine is unique by way of ceremony, flavour, colour and presentation. Wot, the national dish, comes in many varieties-meat, fish, poultry or vegetable of hot pepper and spice stew which are almost always accompanied by a fermented form of unleavened bread called Injera. Layers of the bread are geometrically positioned in Mesob, or basket table, and spoonfuls of the different types of the different types of Wot are then attractively portioned out on the top of them. Then it's finger time, tearing off a piece of Injera and wrapping it around a chosen piece of meat with savoury sauce.

For those not accustomed to such hot food whose ingredients include red and black pepper, cardamon, garlic and coriander, there is an alternative: Alicha is equally delicious but a lot milder and is usually made from chicken or lamb flavoured with green pepper and onion.

How to:

ECC - Elvis Presley Comeback Tour Grand Opening\n

After many years of making a comfortable but quiet living playing the Elvis Impersonator circuit, Elvis' options are running out. He's been cut from the circuit because he's too old to impersonate himself the way we remember him, and after his unfortunate investment choices in Enron and Sub-Saharan Properties, he's decided to return to his adoring fans and join the other has-beens on the Alberta Casino Circuit. As a special bonus, he's had a successful double hip replacement to ensure that his pelvic thrusts are reminiscent of what was not seen on the Ed Sullivan Show back in the 1950's.

Join us for this truly special show as Elvis joins us from his former life of quiet obscurity in Eyebrow, Saskatchewan.

2012-04-11: ECC - TED Night

Join us for a night of TED. From Wikipedia: TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate \"ideas worth spreading.\"

Video 1: Paul Romer: The world's first charter city?
Back in 2009, Paul Romer unveiled the idea for a \"charter city\" -- a new kind of city with rules that favor democracy and trade. This year, at TED2011, he tells the story of how such a city might just happen in Honduras ... with a little help from his TEDTalk.

Video 2: James H Kunstler dissects suburbia
In James Howard Kunstler's view, public spaces should be inspired centers of civic life and the physical manifestation of the common good. Instead, he argues, what we have in America is a nation of places not worth caring about.

Arrive between 7:00 and 7:15 for introductions and to get settled in. We will begin the first video at 7:30. The video is approximately 20 minutes long. After we watch, we'll discuss for approximately 40 minutes (it'll depend on how much we want to discuss... it could be considerably less, but we'll cap it at no more than 60 minutes) Once we're done with the first video, we'll watch the second video (also approximately 20 minutes long) and discuss (same parameters).

Our home is small and humble... be prepared to get cozy... some of us will probably end up sitting on the floor.

2012-05-19: ECC - Italian Centre and Ethiopian Dinner at Abyssinia
Start at the park for a little 'passeggiata' ( Italian for 'stroll' ) along the two blocks or so that make up a portion of Little Italy. The Italian Centre is an italian deli/grocery store/market/coffee shop that carries all things imported from italy. A true sensory adventure.

Meet at 3:00 for a prompt 3:15 departure. The coordinators will be at the park across the street from the Italian Centre by the bronze statue of Frank Spinelli. At least one of us will have our white with black ECC bandana so you can recognize us.

At 5:00, we'll head for Ethiopian dinner at Abyssinia.

How to:

Note that ECC policy is to add 23% to the bill to cover 5% GST plus 18% gratuity. We try to get separate bills whenever we can, but that is usually not possible. The coordinator will calculate everyone's total based on what they ordered plus the 23%. If you disagree with this policy, please do not register for this event.

Come see the movie Chernobyl Diaries at the City Centre 9 movie theatre in Downtown!.

The showing is at 6:50pm, so we'll meet at the front entrance at 6:35pm (top floor of the City Centre Mall, close to the Elephant and Castle pub).

Plot synopsis:

A group of six young vacationers who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an \"extreme\" tour guide.
Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago.
After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone.
They are being hunted by strange beings, who appear to have mutated due to radiation exposure.
They must escape by finding a route out of the city to the outer regions of the area.

Please note: this movie is rated R for violence, some bloody images and pervasive language.

Tuesdays at City Centre 9 are cheap admission night - only $7.99 for adults! :-)
