Club Events 2013

It was a really glorious day for snow shoeing. It was a very large group, but a lot more straight-forward than I feared. With help from Brent and Andrew, everything went very smoothly, and of course, how much can go wrong when people walk up the creek, and then people walk down the creek? Well, a few things went wrong... most notably, I tried again, unsuccessfully, to do away with Robin, as he broke through some thin ice and lost one of his snow shoes. I'm not quite sure how I'm responsible for that, since I wasn't really anywhere near when it happened, but I am definitely a bad-luck beacon for Robin. Hopefully he will still choose to do events with me.

Thanks everyone for a lovely, sunny day of snowshoeing at Elk Island and we lucked out with viewing some bison along the way too!

The Amisk Wuche trail took us approx 50 mins in 2.5 km. Then we had a nice lunch break and went for just over an hour at Beaver Pond trail and it was 3.5 km in length.

Thanks to some of you who came out with me for a nice warm beverage at Starbucks afterwards.

2013-03-17: EOC - IMAX movies: Rocky Mountain Express and Hubble

We checked out two fascinating IMAX movies on a snowy Sunday afternoon at the Telus World of Science.

The first movie was about the history of the rail service across the Rocky Mountains - it was a wonderful mix of the history of the line's construction plus a lot of spectacular footage of the train and the scenery through which it passes.

The second movie featured the Hubble Space Telescope with footage of a crew being launched up into space to carry out essential repairs to the telescope, and the actual repair work itself. However, it wasn't all technical stuff, as we also enjoyed some unique footage of the more distant parts of the universe, taken from the Telescope.

All in all, a pretty good way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday!

Wow the best turn out in three years. From all accounts folks had a great time. Congrats to Narmin for winning the ice-breaker and after she won folks still looked for 15 people to answer 15 questions. Awesome work. Great photos were chosen for us to vote on congratulations to our winners. We had two great sponsor who donated our door prizes and ice-breaker winner prize: Track n Trail and Rocky Mnt Soaps.
