2021-05-28: COC - Twenty Smacker Party: Virtual Treasure Hunt
A wee gathering to re-establish the COC's tradition of the \"Twenty Smacker Party\". We had a pleasant visit, and then the treasure hunt, with all attendees making a respectable gear treasure showing. In spite of a fair amount of grousing (joking, of course) about Rhonda being too lax with people and not requiring that every single item owned be shown, Duane Verity was the overall winner of the treasure hunt.

2021-06-05: COC - Highwood Pass (Hwy 40) from North Winter Gate
It is common in these parts to experience all four seasons in one day. Today I think the universe threw in a couple of bonus seasons! It was one part delight, one part challenge, one part misery, and one part note to self - don’t do this ride when the forecast is even remotely sketchy.

We had some attendees who went up and down quickly and got out early. They were the smart/lucky ones, although they still rode in some gusty gusty wind and rain.

My slow pace ensured that I was up at the pass on time to leave during the worst of the heavy rain and wind, which I (and my less-fortunate companions, Brent and Shahin) ‘enjoyed’ for the first half of the descent, with a top speed of 55km/hour with the rain (and a little hail) pelting me in the face. The best part about it is that I had learned from experience and had added some clothing layers at the top, and changed to insulated winter gloves and insulated pants for the descent.

Duane decided to make a whole day of it for himself and did the whole ride from gate to gate, which, I think is about 100km total. He says he got back to his vehicle at 7pm and rode through a snowstorm on the way down. The forecast for Longview was better than the forecast for Nakiska, so he probably had a better awesome-to-sucky ratio than the rest of us.

It was great to get out with a COC group again finally. I will, however, make a point to stick to doing this ride only when the forecast is really favorable.

Promised thunderstorms never materialized, so we had a great time in the park for a couple of hours. For me it was just nice to get out with a group of people again - it's been such a long time. And I'm honored that Kirsten chose to spend her 300th COC event with us!

Hoping for a lot more of this to come!

- Rhonda

Yes it turned out to be a wonderful afternoon in the park indeed! It was great getting together with some fellow COC'ers for a time of fun and fellowship. Many thanks to Doreen and Roy for supplying Boccee Ball, it was a lot harder than I thought. lol Maureen was a natural at it though. The beach ball volleyball was quite entertaining as well, I will have to do that again. :)

Many thanks to Rhonda for capturing some great photos at the event, its always nice to have an album to look through afterwards. Thanks for coming everyone, it was a blast!

Four glorious days of riding with minimal international tourist traffic and near-perfect weather! Keith and I did the tour with four former- strangers, now friends, and it couldn't have been a better time.

This tour was my first experience using an E-Bike, so I had to blog about that.

  2. Sunwapta Falls to Saskatchewan Crossing
  3. Saskatchewan Crossing to Lake Louise

2021-10-01: COC - North Glenmore to the Bow along the Elbow - Relaxed Pace
We seriously could not have gotten a more beautiful, and pleasant day for this ride. It was just endless beauty.

At the start of the ride, I told everyone that we would make a \"Brent and Rhonda sandwich\" with me at the front and Brent at the back, to keep the group together. I didn't know the route and had just plotted it out on a map, though, and Duane knows my intended route really well, so it didn't take long for Duane to replace me at the front of the group, taking on the role of the \"Rhonda\" in the \"Brent and Rhonda sandwich\". Thank goodness. He knew the best paths to take, and it really was glorious.

It was wonderful to be back out with a COC group. Good to see everyone, and welcome to our newest member, Alex.

Here's my Relive video.

2021-10-02: COC - Glenbow Ranch, Slow Pace
I had originally posted this walk to start at 10:00, but Elissa e- mailed me and suggested starting a bit earlier because of the limited parking available. Boy was THAT a good idea. There was ample parking available. We started at 9:00, and it was cool but not bad. Bonus features of starting early: Less people; more deer. We saw SO MANY deer today - it was great!

Thanks, everyone, for coming out. I was very pleased to do (almost) 10km after being out of the game for so long with plantar fasciitis.

Hope to see you all again soon.

Rhonda
