Club Events 2006: 2006-12-13: CCC - Music Appreciation Night - MONDEGREEN Theme

Blog Entries
Arrive at 6:30PM for introductions and to get settled in. We'll start the music selections at 7:00 (sorry, but to avoid interruption if you are later than 7:00, the door buzzer will be shut off and you won't be able to get in). We should have one CD of approximately 80 minutes of music (8 people times ten minutes of music). We will have a round-robin in which the first person will introduce their music, and then we’ll listen. After a short break, we’ll continue with the next person, and so on. \n

My apartment is small, and the atmosphere casual. We'll be sitting or laying around the living room while we listen. Bring a pillow or cushion if you like for maximum comfiness.\n

Everyone must contribute 6-10 minutes of music for the evening. If the evening has a “theme” (listed in the title), you should (but don’t have to) bring music that fits your interpretation of the theme. Many of our themes are DELIBERATELY ambiguous for maximum creativity! \n

Origin of the term Mondegreen:\n

The term 'mondegreen' — representing a series of words resulting from the mishearing of a statement or song lyric — is generally attributed to Sylvia Wright, who is credited with coining the neologism in a 1954 Harper's column. Ms. Wright was chagrined to discover that for many years she had misunderstood the last line of the first stanza in the Scottish folk ballad \"The Bonny Earl of Murray,\" which reads: \n\n

Ye Highlands and ye Lawlands, \n
Oh! Where ha'e ye been: \n
They ha'e slain the Earl of Murray, \n
And they laid him on the Green. \n
\n\n

Ms. Wright misheard this stanza as: \n\n

Ye Highlands and ye Lawlands, \n
Oh! Where ha'e ye been: \n
They ha'e slain the Earl of Murray, \n
And Lady Mondegreen. \n
\n\n

From the disappearance of Sylvia Wright's tragic heroine, Lady Mondegreen, came the term for describing unconventional interpretations or understandings \n
