This is a combined activity - CYCLE, CLIMB UP A STEEP SCREE SLOPE, AND THEN EXPLORE INSIDE THE CAVE. And we will be travelling at a slow pace so please don't be in a rush.
Distance: ~14 km return. We will start out cycling along an access road for approximately 7 km. It's a mostly gradual uphill, and I will be taking my time. There are two hills that I may have to get off and walk up. At approx 11:30 we should arrive at the trailhead to hike the last ~1km up to the caves, and where we will meet up with Ed's hike-in group.
We will lock up our bikes prior to the 1 km hike up a trail and steep scree slope to the entrance of the cave. The main cavern is about five metres wide, four high and extends some fifty metres into the mountain. Once past this "hall', the tunnel narrows and we will completely lose sight of daylight. At the end are much smaller passages WHICH WE WILL NOT BE GOING INTO. It will be very cold inside, regardless of the outside temperature, and very dark. We will be climbing over rocks and ice inside the cave. HEADLAMPS OR FLASHLIGHTS ARE A NECESSITY and extra batteries are strongly recommended. More info at Canyon Creek Ice Caves
For safety, TWO helmets are required: a Climbing/Scrambling helmet AND cycle helmet. Rentals are available at the outdoor center at UofC and we will head over to UofC together, right after carpool.
Please let me know how many bikes and passengers you can take in the "notes" section. If you are riding as a passenger - please take note of the suggested carpool amount and split the cost with your driver since most drivers will be able to take only one passenger.
We will be leaving our bikes at the trailhead that leads up to the cave. They will be unattended and out of our sight in that area so PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE A BIKE LOCK WITH YOU and do not leave anything of value on your bike.
This activity is dependent on warm & sunny weather, so if we have rain or snow on the day then the event will be rescheduled in hopes of better weather.
