I have been prescribed some injections to follow each chemo-infusion that will boost my white blood cells, but the injections are really expensive (approximately $2000/shot). I can probably get coverage for these, but in order to be eligible, I have to apply for Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage, which takes three or four months to take effect. I ran out to AMA this morning to apply for that. The supplemental funding will cover it until Blue Cross kicks in. Facebook Post:\n Some statistics - 10-year survival rate - for y'all:\n Surgery Only: 84% (So, I'm already here)\n Chemo: +2% (seems like a lot of torture for just 2%, but whatevs)\n Trastuzamab (targets HER2+): +1%\n Bisphosphonates (protects bones): +1%\n Hormone Therapy: +3%\n So, possible total is 91%, however, for the general population, the possible total is only 93% (meaning, folks would be dying of other stuff over ten years anyway), so the treatment gets me close to the same survival rate as the general population. \n I am probably not going to do the hormone therapy. I react very badly to hormone drugs, plus I already take Berberine to help manage my blood glucose, and it has been identified as a very effective treatment for estrogen-positive breast cancer (the reason why they want me to do hormone therapy). I tolerate Berberine very well. This is a decision that I'll kick down the road - it doesn't need to be decided until next year anyway. Maybe I'll end up trying the drug and see how it goes before I make a decision.\n\n EDIT: June 13: I discovered that these stats are only relevant if your cancer has NOT metastasized. Not sure how that's helpful, given that they can never really be sure (until years later) whether it has metastasized. They can look for mets, but there's always a chance of one tiny cell eluding them, and... mets. Facebook Post:\n I’m so grateful to all of you for your support - I appreciate all of it. ?\nI was spiraling hard on the weekend and I want to say thanks to Elissa, Sharon and Barbara for getting me out of my head and leveled out. ? ? ? \n If I didn’t call on you personally this time… don’t worry… your turn is coming!! |
