Went into the ‘meat locker’ today. This is Part 2 of the Dietary Study (EMBRACE) that I'm participating in, and is a 28-hour stint in an air-tight room, which they call their hotel room (but Brent and I dubbed the 'meat locker'). The room is air tight with a big unit in the ceiling that records my oxygen and carbon dioxide for the 28-hours that I’m in here. For more information about the EMBRACE study, you can see my entry for Part 1.\n
Thoughts shared from the Meat Locker:\n\n- To Brent 9:07: The first time they fed me scrambled eggs (during Part 1) they were ok. Today they are like an old tire. Yuk!\n
- To Brent 11:30: Finished the treadmill. Now I just sit and eat and sit and eat and sit and eat.\n
- With Brent Via WhatsApp 16:30: Their menu is way too much food. The lunch was too much - I almost couldn't finish it. Then just a couple hours later they brought a snack. Dinner will be soon, and then another snack at 8:00. Yikes!\n
- With Brent 17:30: \n
\n- As soon as we hung up they brought me another meal. I'm going to explode.
- Brent: Monga monga. \n
- Me: I'm tryin'... OOF! \n
- Brent: I think you were told to try to eat it all but if you can't they'll accept that. \n
- Me: Yeah, I'm contemplating not finishing. Urp.\n
- Brent: If it's going to make you ill don't eat it. Steve, don't eat it!!\n
- Me: I gave up. I ate more if it than I thought I could. I sent back two or three mouthfuls. When I got to the point that eating more would make me hurl I had to stop.\n
- Brent: Good choice.\n
- Me: I will (almost) always choose to not hurl.\n
\n - To Brent 20:12: Something I hadn't considered... part of the 8pm snack was cheerios and milk. They gave me 2x as much milk as I would use for the cheerios so I had to drink the rest of it. GAAAAGGGGG!!!\n
- Entering the Meat Locker
- Researcher demos the air-tight chambers
These chambers are used for passing food, and other things, in and out of the \"Meat Locker\" through the 28-hours. Other than this initial demo, I was \"locked in\" by myself for the 28-hours.
- View from the bed
Air-tight passing chambers, Window for them to check on me, Television, Door to the outside world (with a \"no touchy\" sign on it)
- Bed
- Treadmill, chair, toilet
I was only allowed to exercise for 30-minutes on the treadmill. Besides that I was mostly sitting or laying around the whole time.
- Oh look! Food showed up!
- The testing apparatus
This looks like an Air Conditioner, but it's actually the unit that tests the Oxygen that I'm consuming and Carbon Dioxide that I put out
- Pee collection
I had to collect my pee so they could measure volume, and... I don't know if they ran any kind of tests on it
- Pee collection
I had to put the pee into jugs marked Day 1 and Day 2, and the jugs went into the fridge.
