President
Event Coordinator

Shirley
Shirley is originally from Victoria, BC, but has lived all over Canada. She arrived in Edmonton in March 2006, after a 5 year stint in St. John’s, NL. She joined the newly formed EOC shortly thereafter and has enjoyed discovering Edmonton and surrounding areas through EOC events ever since.

Despite the fact that she gets paid to go hiking and fly around in helicopters, it's still not enough of the outdoors for Shirley. She has to go tromping through the woods on her own time as well, trusty mutt at her side........or rather off in the woods somewhere within barking distance.

Shirley’s outdoor events involve dog-friendly hikes, snowshoeing and geocaching, while her indoor events involve food, music and sometimes fine wine. She might even throw some camping or backpacking and trail rides into the mix this summer.

As President, Shirley's role is to:
- Spearhead the planning and decision making activities for the club.
- Coordinate, train and coach members of volunteer team.
- Deal with member issues.
- Perform duties of unfilled positions.
- Manage the club waiver, rental agreement and other legal document issues.
- Answer inquiries sent to pres@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

See Upcoming Events or Past Events being coordinated by Shirley.

Vice President
Event Coordinator

Mark G
Mark joined the EOC in February 2007. Born and raised in Edmonton, he has spent many years skiing and cycling in the Alberta Rockies and the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Mark was attracted to the EOC by the variety of activities and the desire to try cross-country ski trips. He loves to explore new trails and tap the group’s knowledge to improve on his planned trip itinerary.

Mark’s club nickname is "Scout" because he can always be counted on to be dependable, prepared and possesses a strong sense of direction.

Mark has completed three bike trips from Jasper to Banff along the scenic Highway 93. Currently he enjoys hiking, scrambling, cycling, caving, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. Look for upcoming caving expeditions in Alberta’s caves and dog sled adventures up North near Athabasca.

Mark’s priority on any event is to have fun and stay safe. He will always make an effort to ensure each participant feels included and comes away with a positive experience while enjoying outdoor pursuits together.

As VP, Mark's role is to:
- Assist the President with planning and decision making and in dealing with member issues.
- Be able to perform all volunteer duties.
- Assist in coaching/training volunteers.
- Assist President with management of legal documents.
- Store club waivers in a safe location.
- Record signed waivers in the club database.
- Assist President in performing duties of open positions.
- Generally provide backup for President when President is unavailable.
- Answer inquiries sent to vp@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Treasurer
Founder

Steph B
Stephanie moved from Calgary to Edmonton for work in early 2006. After having been heavily involved in the Calgary Outdoor Club as an event coordinator, then Treasurer, and even Vice President, Stephanie decided that a similar outdoor club was just what she (and Edmonton) needed.

In March of 2006, Stephanie and her trusty VP, Viola, created the Edmonton Outdoor Club and the first events went onto the calendar in April 2006.

Stephanie is now very happy to see a brand new executive take over the club and passes the presidency baton to Shirley.

Stephanie enjoys leading weekend events to Jasper, Nordegg or to a ski hill, and beginer events like easy hikes, cross country skiing and canoeing. She also enjoys the occasional social event such as going to an ethnic restaurant, the symphony or a good ol' poker game.

As the EOC Treasurer, Stephanie is responsible for:
- Managing club finances, including receiving member payments for events and voluntary donations, and making event payments to service providers
- Managing club PayPal account
- Paying club expense payments, such as web hosting, etc.
- Managing club budget
- Answering e-mail inquiries sent to treasurer@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Assistant Treasurer
Event Coordinator

Donna
Donna has lived in Edmonton since 1981. She moved here when she graduated from university. Her outdoor interests are hiking, canoeing, cross country skiing, biking, camping, backpacking, and some astronomy. She was involved in Scouting for the last 13 years, but now her youngest son has quit, so she set out to find a group of people to camp and enjoy the outdoors with. This is what led her to the Edmonton Outdoor Club. She has been involved with the Girl Guides for nearly 40 years now, but her group does not get outdoors as often as she would like.

Donna enjoys being a math and physics teacher, but admits that the best times of my life were summer jobs where she worked in remote areas of Northern Canada where she would not set foot in a building for 3 months. Donna's dream vacation is spending the summer with a group of people who are all keen to paddle the North Saskatchewan River from Rocky Mountain House to Hudson's Bay. Expected travel time is 3-4 months.

Donna is not a fairweather camper, having lived outdoors for 3 months at a time and done some winter camping, her tolerance for bad weather is quite high, so her trips will go rain or shine. She loves to hike in the River Valley and does many urban hikes, but she will also organize canoeing and white water rafting trips.

Donna is the club's Assistant Treasurer. Her role is to:
- Assist treasurer with managing club finances, receiving payments, etc.
- Be a cosigner for the bank account.
- Provide backup for Treasurer when Treasurer is unavailable.

See Upcoming Events or Past Events being coordinated by Donna.

Volunteer Coordinator
Event Coordinator

Jason L
Jason has been with the EOC since 2006 and coordinated events since early 2007. Originally from the mega-metropolis of Hong Kong, where most of the outdoors is covered in concrete, he is still learning about all the exciting activities nature offers in and around Edmonton and Alberta. He loves to mountain bike, snowboard, golf, play tennis, geocache, paintball, hike, climb, and other more low-key activities like BBQ'ing, photography, road trips, sight-seeing, and going to a local museum/lecture.

Jason has also coordinated numerous events with the EOC and is happy to be taking on the role of the Volunteer Coordinator and helping members contribute to the club by becoming new Event Coordinators. Please do not hesitate to contact him to learn how to become an EOC Event Coordinator!

Jason is the club's volunteer coordinator. He is responsible for:
- Recruiting event coordinators.
- Training and coaching event coordinators.
- Answering event coordinators' questions.
- Monitoring events to ensure proper procedure is being followed.
- Following up with inactive coordinators to ensure that the volunteer page stays current and up-to-date.
- Answering inquiries sent to volunteer@edmontonoutdoorclub.com
If you are interested in coordinating for the Edmonton Outdoor Club, review our Coordinator Checklist, and then contact Jason at volunteer@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Safety and Equipment Coordinator
Event Coordinator

Catherine L
Originally from Ontario, Catherine moved to Edmonton for school in 2005. After searching for an outdoor group for several months, she was pleased to discover the Edmonton Outdoor Club, and promptly joined. Catherine is still exploring Edmonton and area, and is excited to be close to the mountains (relatively close, anyway).

Catherine's main passions are canoeing and cross-country skiing, but she enjoys most things outdoors. Watch for activities such as hiking, cross-country skiing, backpacking, and possibly a canoe trip.

As the Safety and Equipment Coordinator, Catherine is responsible for:
- Assessing risks involved in EOC events.
- Consulting with club volunteers to ensure that safety concerns and issues are considered and addressed.
- Being knowledgeable about equipment and rentals appropriate to EOC events - Answering inquiries about safety and equipment.
If you have any questions about safety or equipment, please contact Catherine at safety@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Communications Manager
Event Coordinator

Karen
Originally from a small town north of Calgary, Karen returned to Alberta after living in Ottawa for 10 years.

Karen enjoys most things outdoors – the bugs and dirt being her least favorite part – and plans on organizing a variety of outdoor activities that include hiking, camping, cross-country skiing and ice climbing. Even though she enjoys the challenge of making it to the summit, she enjoys taking her time on the hike and taking in the sights on the trail.

She is a very social person and enjoys planning indoor events that involve cocktails and movies. Karen is also passionate about travel with her favorite travel destination being the Middle East.

As Communications Manager, Karen's role is to:
- Answer questions posed to info@edmontonoutdoorclub.com
- Develop rapport and foster a friendly, comfortable atmosphere with people inquiring about the club.
- Distribute club newsletter on a regular basis.
- Gather, and potentially write, articles for the club newsletter.
- Answering e-mail inquiries sent to info@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Content Editor
Event Coordinator

Jeff S
Jeff was born and raised in Calgary. He now lives in Vegreville with his wife and is adjusting to small town life after living in Edmonton for the previous 8 years. He is a 2005 U of A graduate with a BA degree in French language and literature.

Jeff joined the EOC in March of 2006 but took several months before becoming fully active. He enjoys the philosophy behind the EOC and believes this club to be a good vehicle for pursuing outdoor activities with other like-minded enthusiasts.

Look for Jeff to organize hikes, multi-day backpack trips, scrambles, and the occasional winter activity. He now prefers to enjoy the journey rather than making record time. He tries to maintain a moderate pace on his trips and will go rain or shine but may adjust his plans to suit the weather. Jeff is always open to exploring new areas and is never opposed to off-trail hiking or exploration, especially if it involves a better view or bagging a summit. He has no problems with early morning starts to the mountains and enjoys making the most of his time while there.

Jeff has enjoyed many trips to the Canadian Rockies and while living in Europe, on occasion enjoyed trips to European mountain ranges. He enjoyed climbing Mt. Jebel Toubkal, at 4167m; this is the highest mountain he has climbed to date. He has several favourite hikes and scrambles: Little Yoho Valley and Skoki for scrambles and several favourite day and multi-day hiking trails in each of the Rocky Mountain parks.

When not on a trail or mountain, Jeff enjoys researching and reading other people’s stories of mountain adventure. He is an avid runner and enjoys participating in races, and still believes the marathon to be the best race out there. He enjoys watching hockey and movies, playing sports, and spending time with his wife. Jeff is goal orientated and very ambitious when it comes to the outdoors. He hopes to meet many people on his events.

As Content Editor, Jeff's role is to:
- Review web site content to ensure it is correct and up-to-date.
- Send required changes to Webmaster for web site update.
- Review Event Details for completeness, accuracy and grammatical errors.
- Review Bulletin Board postings, Calendar Postings and Classified Ads for completeness, accuracy and grammatical errors.
- Answering e-mail inquiries sent to content@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Sponsorship Officer
Event Coordinator

Narmin
Narmin (pronounced Nar-meen or Nar-mean depending on how often you mispronounce her name!) is often the blur you see zipping by as you go about your daily business. She has a Type A personality, which results in her living life to the fullest and filling every moment with some sort of activity. When she's not at work, you can usually find Narmin doing something active (rock climbing or trying to master aerial skills on the trapeze), spoiling her two nephews, seeing the world, or volunteering for a good cause.

Narmin was born in British Columbia but has lived in Edmonton since she was a toddler. Her B.C. roots are pretty evident when you get into a political discussion (despite living in Alberta almost her entire life, she's still a bleeding-heart Liberal about most things).

Up until about four years ago, you likely would have only seen Narmin in the Great Outdoors because her sense of direction failed her yet again, thereby leading her right out of the city. Thankfully, Narmin discovered her passion for travel and after hiking dormant volcanoes in New Zealand she decided she'd better take advantage of the opportunities in her own backyard.

Narmin looks forward to seeing you at her climbing, spelunking (caving) and aerial skills (trapeze) events and also at her social events, including live theatre, pottery classes and enjoying Edmonton's many and varied festivals.

As Sponsorship Officer, Narmin's role is to: - Enter and maintain data pertaining to EOC sponsors (sponsor information, banner ad schedules, sponsored events, event data feeds to media partners).
- Answer e-mail inquiries sent to partners@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Webmaster
Event Coordinator

Ryan M
Born and raised in Eastern Ontario, Ryan lived in both Ottawa and Toronto before moving to Edmonton in January 2005 for his doctoral studies. He stumbled across the Edmonton Outdoor Club website one day in October 2006, and joined the EOC immediately. Since joining, he has become a very active member and is happy that he has met many friends through the club.

Ryan enjoys trying different activities all the time. He particularly looks forward to taking his cross-country skis out on the trail in the winter. In the summer months, he enjoys any opportunity to explore the mountains, and plans to organize some backpacking trips. And he's planning to organize all kinds of other activities: visits to museums, visits to some of Edmonton's summer festivals, BBQ's, and maybe the odd urban hike.

As the Webmaster, Ryan is responsible for:
- Updating pages on web site.
- Updating web site options for site formatting and functioning.
- Updating announcements on club home page.
- Creating and updating club e-mail addresses/forwarders.
- Answering e-mail inquiries sent to webmaster@edmontonoutdoorclub.com

Secretary
Rachel F
Hailing from the mystic deeps of nothern Ontario, Rachel moved to Edmonton in the fall of 2006 to pursue a career with the provincial government.

Rachel was thrilled to discover the Edmonton Outdoor Club, joined immediately and attended her first event within 5 days of moving to the city. She enjoys hiking, canoeing, and group sports and is always up for trying new things.

As Secretary, Rachel's role is to:
- Take notes at volunteer meetings.
- Type up meeting minutes and email to all volunteers.
- Post minutes in volunteer section of EOC Forum.

Event Coordinator
Bryan W.
Born and raised in Missouri, Bryan figured he would see what was outside the US. He didn’t get very far, but is happy to have been in Edmonton for the past few years. Edmonton is a beautiful city to be outside in.

In the summer, expect frequent bike trips, hikes, and walks as well as the occasional visit to some of the many pubs. Bryan also enjoys day and weekend trips to the mountains and nearby parks, and is not afraid of climbing, camping, or shooting friends with a paintball. Snow and mountains are still novelties to Bryan, so he looks for any excuse to snowboard and explore the frozen wilderness during the winter.

Event Coordinator
David
David grew up in Edmonton and after spending some time in Calgary and Toronto, has a better appreciation of what the Edmonton area and the Rockies have to offer.

Since joining the club in the fall of 2006, he has enjoyed many indoor activities with club, but has the most fun in the great outdoors going hiking, canoeing, cycling, backpacking, skiing, camping and climbing. He loves the diversity of events within the EOC and hopes to contribute positively to the club.

Event Coordinator
Fiona C
Fiona was born in Whitehorse, Yukon, and moved to Saskatchewan at an early age. She spent many of her summers as a child camping with her family in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park and learned to love the outdoors. She is also a professional squirrel catcher - having caught her first squirrel (by the tail) at the age of 4.

Not able to find a career as a squirrel catcher, Fiona moved to Edmonton to pursue a career as an accountant. She joined the EOC in March of 2007 in hopes of meeting new people who love the outdoors as much as she does.

You will find Fiona leading outdoor events like hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, as well as introductory sports such as karate, fencing and self defense.

See Upcoming Events or Past Events being coordinated by Fiona C.

Event Coordinator
Julie B
Julie was browsing the internet to find clubs in Calgary after just moving there ... thrilled that Google kicked out the Calgary Outdoor Club she signed up and was on a hike the very next morning. She only lived in Calgary for seven months but the COC made it easy to get involved in outdoor activities with others. She was happy to discover that someone was already planning the EOC. Julie returned to Edmonton knowing she would be part of the EOC and glad that the first event was days after her move.
Julie coordinates urban hikes in Edmonton’s network of trails, trips to nearby provincial parks, camping, and canoeing adventures. She grew up camping, boating, quading, snowmobiling, skiing, hiking, tobogganing, exploring and swimming. She looks forward to planning events like White Water Rafting and/or Kayaking next season.
Julie is from Northern Alberta but attended the University of Alberta and has worked throughout Alberta including Edmonton. She has traveled to British Columbia, Quebec, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and New Caledonia but looks forward to seeing Europe one day.
Julie is excited to be part of the grassroots effort to expand the Edmonton Outdoor Club. She loves to meet new people and would like to help others to become Event Coordinators.

Event Coordinator
rod g
Rod was born and raised in Edmonton and spent a lot of time as a child, and now as an adult, exploring the river valley and fishing and camping with family and friends. He has always seen sport and activity as a way of life and can’t ever see being inactive. In 2000, he and his family biked from Jasper to Banff and he continues to challenge himself with biking every chance he gets.

Rod believes we are very lucky as Edmontonians to live where we do. The river valley is so diverse and has so much to offer, yet many of us never use it to its full potential.

Rod loves being diverse in his activities and joined the outdoor club to try new things and gather information about the outdoors from anyone he can.

You will find Rod leading events such as mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, fishing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Expect his events to be challenging, rewarding and fun.

See Upcoming Events or Past Events being coordinated by rod g.

Event Coordinator
Zoltán
Zoltan is originally from Yugoslavia but moved here at a very early age and has lived across western Canada from Vancouver to Stewart to Sherwood Park. His basic philosophy is 'anything that requires physical exertion is great'. You will find him preoccupying himself with mountain biking, hiking, scrambling, sharp shooting, bowling, camping, ballroom dancing and photography, so look forward to events of this nature. Since he was born in the Mediterranean, he is not a fan of outdoor winter activities but grudgingly does them. He is not an extreme throw caution to the wind kind of guy but more sublime and straight forward. He lives out in Leduc but makes frequent visits to Edmonton to participate in such clubs as EOC, Recreational Volleyball, and Photography. See you at the next event!
