Write Up:
What a great place to learn what how to maintain your bike. Britt was a fantastic mentor - bike mechanic and we learned soooo much. Some comments from the girls that went: Kim says: I can't believe what a wonderful experience this was, having no boys really allowed us to feel comfortable asking "stupid" questions. I learned so much! I can now adjust my hubs (I didn't even know how they worked before), adjust my breaks, adjust my gears and if all goes well I'll learn how to true a wheel next Wednesday. I'm still not sure I can change a tire but I guess I'll keep a look out for that session. I highly recommend the Community Bike Shop! What a fabulous philosophy they have. They are Green to the max and also provide services for troubled youth and the homeless. They are able to gain experience fixing bikes which provides self esteem and a way to make a living and also provides them with transportation. The shop provides bike stands, all of the required the tools and supplies such as de-greaser, oil and rags. They also have used parts that people can help themselves to. The Community Bike Shop works on a donation basis. They take in used bikes and fix them up and sell them. They keep parts from bikes that they can't fix. They even have a program where you can volunteer 10 times and then pick yourself out a bike to take home. We all left donations as we were very thankful for the experience.Anyone who wants to learn more about how to keep your bike in tip-top shape should go to the Community Bike Shop. Thanks to Barbara for setting this up and Rhonda for letting her use the Smokin' Awesome website to manage this unofficial event. :) Iren says:The teaching of bike fixing reminiscent of old time 'master- student' closeness and hands on'', it is effective and comfortably personal. Instead relying and paying others for, this is great essential learning investment which can last a lifetime once learned. thx. for posting this!!
