Rhandom Schittshowe Cancer Journey: 2025-06-17: My friend, Bisoprolol

Before I was diagnosed with cancer, I had developed a tremor in my hands. It started in late 2021, but was so mild I was hardly aware of it. By early 2024, it was quite pronounced and bothersome. I researched tremors, and apparently, you can tell the difference between \"essential tremor\" tremors and Parkinson's Disease tremors thusly - essential tremors happen when you're trying to do something with your hands (e.g., grasp a glass to drink), while Parkinson's tremors happen when your limbs are at rest. Well, to my dismay, my tremors seemed to happen most when my hands were at rest.\n

I talked to my GP about the tremors, and she said that one way to confirm what kind of tremor I had was to put me on a Beta Blocker, which are effective at calming essential tremors (but not Parkinson's). I started taking the Beta Blocker, and it did seem to calm the tremors, but it also made me severely depressed, so I stopped taking it, and the tremor resumed.\n

Anyway, what does this all have to do with my cancer journey blog? Well, I was put on Bisoprolol as a protective measure against heart damage that can be caused by the Trastuzamab, which I was given for the last year because of my cancer being HER2+. When I started taking the Bisoprolol, though, my tremor all but disappeared and I've been almost tremor-free for months now.\n

My oncologist (the nurse practitioner) was going to take me off of the Bisoprolol once my Trastuzamab was finished, but I was hoping that I could stay on it to control the tremor. I talked to my GP about it and she has agreed to keep me on the Bisoprolol. Yay!
